How do you let know manf. know which part number & rev to mark?

Hello configuration gurus,

Many companies have different item/part numbers to the describing drawing/document numbers.

• Do you mark part/item number and revision on your manufactured items? While we do not build by revision we feel it neccessary to receive parts and inspect by revision.
• How do you let manufacturing know which part number and revision number to mark, especially if manufacturing is outsourced and they do not have access to your PLM/ERP system?
  1. Do you add it to one or all of the describing documents?
  2. Something else. (if so what)

If we add part revision to describing documents, then we are forced to revise every document where part number/version is reported, whenever the part is revised, even if the change does not affect the document. Which seems like a bad idea.
