Associate wtpart

Hi ,

In Windchill 10.0 M010, I am already created a WTPart inside Windchill. Now am creating a CAD Document with the same name of WTPart. But  when i check in the cad document with out use Auto Associate option.

But after check in the WTPart and CAD Documents are not associated. I read somewhere like if the names are same it will associate automatically.

Whether i have to set any Preference for that???

Thanks in advance..

What are the differences between Watermarks and Stamps on PDFs ?

We have configured and customised Windchill PDMLink to show some of the CAD Document information on native MCAD drawings created with Creo Parametric and SolidWorks, by using a combination of implicit mapping of Attributes and customised copies of the "download delegate" and the Promotion workflows.  At the end of the workflows, the Lifecycle state changes and the drawings get re-published by WVS and the cadworkers, to make new PDFs showing the latest version, Lifecycle state, etc.  Hence both the native CAD drawings and the PDF viewable copies show exactly the same information in the drawing title block.

The same behaviour is not possible for ECAD applications, such as Creo Schematic or PCBCAD tools from eg. Mentor Graphics, because they have a set of native files that get ZIPed up to make the ECAD Document primary attachments, and the viewables are (typically) made on the client-side automatically during the check-in process.  Hence there is no mechanism for sharing Attributes & values between Windchill WGM and the native ECAD drawing files, and no sensible way to re-publish the viewable copies after approval in order to show the new version and state.

Following discussions with PTC and our VAR, and as I have described on another recent posting (add cross-ref. here ...), it seems the best solution for ECAD would be to add watermarks or stamps to the PDFs (copies of drawings, etc, attached to ECAD Derived documents) in order to add and show the missing metadata.  I have been searching the PTC websites and the Internet for information about the various ways this might be achieved, and found quite a lot of it is confusing  - as the terms watermark and stamp sometimes get mixed up.  I have even read about some PDF stamping tools that apply watermarks, and vice versa !

Can anyone confirm or clarify the following tentative conclusions :

I think that stamps may be more versatile than watermarks, as they may be more easily sized and positioned to fill in a title block on different sizes of drawing sheet (A4, A3, A2, A1, A0) ?

I think that stamps are applied on top of the visible information, and that watermarks are applied behind the visible information, and that both can be made opaque or translucent ?

I think that stamps can be omitted when printing PDFs but that watermarks cannot as long as they were created with the relevant options set to prevent them being hidden ?

I think that the watermarking functionality in WVS only works on files viewed in Creo View, and that if a PDF viewable is downloaded it will not show that watermark ?

There are a few, possibly several, third party tools for adding watermarks and/or stamps to PDFs, and of particular interest are the ones that can be used from the command line (using java or javascript, as these might be used in workflows or perhaps with the WWGMTK...), from companies that provide add-ons or consultancy services for Windchill, as mentioned by other users on this forum (eg. Fishbowl, Najanaja, Wincom).  Can anyone describe how they have used any of these tools with the ECAD WGM and PCBCAD applications ?

PDF Files Not Opening

We have a strange situation in Windchill 10.2 m030 CPS9.  If we have Excel open a cell active where we are entering something, we are not able to open a PDF document from Windchill.  As soon as we close the cell, or if we open it in CREO View, it will open.  These are not always an option and the user shouldn't have to remember that it is okay one time but not okay the next time.  I'm suspecting that it has something to do with Windchill DTI but cannot figure it out.  There are also times where it will take minutes (5+) to even open Excel or Word files to open. (I know a different issue, but I wonder if they are related).

Has anyone else experienced the PDF issue?  Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks!

I am exploring option to complete work item using a Java or Inforengine tasks. Thingworx has out of the box CompleteWorkItems service. It does not take Voting ( Approve / Reject) as an input parameter.  So I am wondering if anyone has explored completing the workitem with a Vote option in WIndchill.

Thanks for your help.

How to clear/remove the unsuccessful migration data from Data base

Am migrating a data from Pro/Intralink 3.4 to PDMLink 9.1 system using Pro/Intralink Data Migrator.  While running the Document loader I found the Revision Series mapped for migration was wrong. We noticed it within minutes and aborted the migration. Then I mapped the correct Revision Series and restarted the migration.

Now the Migrator took the right Revision Series and ran till Family Tables Loader. However we later noticed that 2 Family Tables did not get migrated as it threw an exception in the logs. While investigating that issue we found that some more objects did not get migrated at all though we couldn’t trace the errors in the logs for the missing objects.  Now we need to guidance to solve the issue so that we can proceed with the migration.

Adding classification images on the creation of parts with PartsLink.

$

We are using Windchill PDM link 10.2 and we are investigating if the use of Partslink brings any added value for our company.

Therefore i am on a testenvironmant looking how and what can be done with Partslink for catalogue parts.

During the creating of a WTpart you can select the creating classification items.

During the selecting of the classification criteria is there any possibility to add the exiting image from the selected class?

The image is automatically shown if you do a search request for existing items, but it would be a great help for the users if they can see the same image during creation of new items??

Thanks for the support.

Is Windchill flakey?

$

So I was working on a project using Creo 2.0 connected to Windchill 10.2 when all the sudden there is a problem with check-in of my part.  I try to investigate - I click on the red stop sign on the status bar to examine the event manager - up comes a blank window.

I try the "workspace" link - up pops up an error message with a Status Code 501 - no access to this object or object does not exist.  Uh oh, that 2nd part doesn't sound too good.

I check in a stand-alone browser - things don't look good: many of my workspaces have disappeared: they are no longer listed on the "My Workspaces" section in my home page.

There are still links to these objects in the "Recently Visited" lists, but attempting to view them throws the same Code 501 message.

I ask other users if they are having issues - nope.

Logging in as the wcadmin, I can see that the workspaces for my regular user are still there.  But from there, the only thing a wcadmin can do with them is to delete them...

So, looking at the methodserver logs, I see ERRORS all over the place saying my regular user doesn't have permissions to access the context(s)...  What the heck?  No one was messing with access rights, all users still belong to the same groups that have the correct permissions...  It's a total mystery to me why I am all the sudden locked out of some product contexts.

So I get PTC tech support and they recommend I go and grant my user access to these contexts through the policy administration tool.  Well, after giving my user the Read rights to some PDMLink object of a particular context, "My Workspaces" section is now fuller.  But when I try to access the common-space folders of this context, the same 501 error comes up.  So the tech support say we need to add more Policies that grant my user read access for the Cabinet type of an object...  I am starting to panic because this solution doesn't seem to be getting at the root of the problem - am I going to have to patch the policies for every context I was involved in before?

So I ask - can we try to reboot the server first?

And after doing so, the problem goes away.

Well, there is another thing - I used to have bookmarks in the "Hot Links" of the "My Notebook" section in my homepage.  Now they're gone.

So questions to you Windchill gurus:

- has anyone seen this kind of flakiness before?

- does Windchill automatically get rid of the bookmarks that point to contexts to which you don't have access?

- the server has been up for 17 days before restarting it today.  Is this too long of a time?  We do have a daily backup going - but I wonder if the windchill server should be shut down during the backup process and then restarted after the vaults are backed up...

What is the Best practice in below event ...

I am working with Windchill 10.2 and CATIA V5. I have below scenario, where I have WTPart and CAD Document associated and Published in Windchill.

But after these data released, I have to release another part which is same like the one released except say material / Paint / Supplier difference. so as per the best practice which option is most accepted from below;

Option A: Create new CAD document (B) keeping CCP link from existing CAD document (A). Make B document owner associate with new WTPart B. Keep the same drawing 'C' Conent associated with New WTPart (B)

With Option A, the structure is simple for understanding when it is 2 - 3 parts connected, when these number grow up this structure will be more complex to manage.

Option B: Create a design table for CAD document to create three instances (1 for creating drawing and two for ownership association with WTParts)

With Option B, I have to revise the existing WTPart to connect with new instance of the design table and update all the assemblies where earlier CAD document was used, So my understanding is this is not a good option to go with, Please advise.

Experts in this community, what option do you use in these situation, Or is there any better option out. As sometime, we do not predict the family of parts requirement when a design is created and released.

Thanks

Satish

workspace folders

How do I create multiple folders in my workspace to store my different CAD projects.

If I can only store one CAD projects at the time (using Solidworks 2012) can I have multiple workspaces open at the same time.

All I want is to have direct access (or even simultaneous access) to my different projects without having to close SW.

Can this be done
